Accessible Learning: HTML eBooks | My Nursing Community

The textbook is traditionally the core of many courses. To support students using assistive technology to access course materials, Pearson now publishes screen-readable “HTML eBook” versions of its mathematics and statistics textbooks. Formatted in HTML and MathML and compatible with JAWS and other Windows screen readers, HTML eBooks are national texts that offer

  • complete core content, including text and images, in single column presentation.
  • alternative text descriptions for all important figures and photos.
  • enhanced navigation support, including interactive table of contents, go-to-page functionality, and keyboard access.

For texts not yet in the HTML eBook format, we continue to provide PDFs of your textbook or eText, Student Solutions Manuals, Graphing Calculator Manuals, and other ancillaries, which can be used with such accessibility technologies as screen readers and Braille displays. You can also convert the PDF files into another format, such as a printed Braille book. Requests for alternative texts can be made online.

Rick Clinton is Publisher with Higher Education’s English, Mathematics, and Student Success (EMSS) team.  As Accessibility Advocate and Leader (AAL) for the group, he develops and coordinates accessibility strategy and programs with editorial, technology, and legal teams, as well as with instructors, disabilities services staff, accessibility advocates, and assistive device developers, to ensure that our products are as accessible as possible to all students. Prior to joining Pearson, Rick was President and co-founder of Intellipro, Inc., the creator of the MathXL/MyMathLab platform.

Get Recognized for your Exemplary BlackBoard Course with the Catalyst Awards

The BlackBoard Team is pleased to announce that the 2013 Blackboard Catalyst Awards are now open for submissions! Take advantage of a wonderful professional development opportunity and submit your course to the 2013 Blackboard Exemplary Course Program (ECP).  The Blackboard Exemplary Course Program honors those course creators whose courses demonstrate best practices in four major areas: Course Design, Interaction & Collaboration, Assessment and Learner Support.

A group of voluntary course reviewers, along with the ECP Directors, will use the Exemplary Course Rubric to evaluate submitted courses and provide valuable feedback to all participants. This feedback will give you insight on how to better engage with your students and elevate your teaching experiences. Past participants have reported that the experiences of evaluating their courses using the rubric improved their courses and made them stronger course designers.

By submitting your course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Reflect on your own course design through a self-evaluation of your course and gain new perspective and insights
  • Receive detailed feedback on your own course development including best practices and areas for improvement
  • Apply lessons learned from the Exemplary Course Rubric to your own courses or those you are helping to develop
  • Gain professional development experience and recognition for your accomplishments and participation

Don’t want to submit a course? Consider becoming a volunteer course reviewer to:

  • Explore in-depth a variety of different online courses and get ideas and inspiration for your own online courses
  • Apply lessons learned from the Exemplary Course Rubric to your own courses or those you are helping to develop
  • Share your knowledge and experience with others by providing feedback on their course designs

If you have any questions about the program, please send an email to [email protected]. For information on the other Catalyst Awards categories, please visit blackboard.com/catalyst.

Webinar: Author Kathleen Perrin on Palliative Care

There are some nurses who firmly believe that all patients’ care should have an element of palliative care, a focus on the patients’ and families’ comfort, concerns, and needs. Clearly as end-of-life approaches, palliative care gains in importance over curative care. This webinar hosted by author Kathy Perrin will discuss what palliative care involves and will describe triggers for a palliative care consult in critically ill patients. Evidence-based ways to initiate and continue the discussion of limitation of care, including Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR), will be highlighted. Finally, best practices for care of the dying patient in the critical care environment will be reviewed.

Please join us on Tuesday, July 24 at 1:00 PM EDT to discuss this topic.

Kathleen Perrin is a professor of nursing at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she teaches critical care nursing, professional nursing, ethics, and understanding suffering. In recognition of her teaching ability, she was awarded the Saint Anselm College AAUP Excellence in Faculty Accomplishment Award.  She has been a practicing critical care nurse for over 30 years and a member of the American Association of Critical Care (AACN) Nurses for nearly as long. She has published and presented in the areas of critical care nursing, nursing ethics, nursing history, suffering experienced by patients as well as health care providers, and conflict among members of the health care team. Check out her recent publication, Understanding the Essentials of Critical Care Nursing, 2e, publishing on July 30!
